Most people will have differing opinions when you ask them what the most important position is on a football field. Some will more than likely say the quarterback, and some will tell you the name of another position. However would any of these positions really be able to score effectively without the offensive linemen?
It isn’t just important that they are making plays it is also important that they are in shape. They need to be in shape in order to continue to play effectively and last for as long as the quarters go. If they cannot last the duration of the quarter than the team suffers as a whole.
One of the commonly used line drills includes using a lineman and 2 defensive lineman on a hill. The point of the exercise is for the lineman to drive the other two up the hill while swapping between them on the command of a whistle. This helps teach the lineman how to engage quickly and with a lot of speed and power. The whistle acts as a way to shift their attention onto another possible defender as quickly as possible. Doing it on the hill of course helps to build more muscle and stamina.
Another very common drill is the use of a lineman pushing into a defender with a blocking shield. This works as follows. The linemen get down into regular starting positions. When the whistle blows they will proceed to push full force into the blocking shield trying to push it as hard and as fast as they can. Again this exercise builds stamina and muscle. Both are important qualities to have in a lineman.
These are just some of the drills used for football offensive line drills. All of which are extremely important for the players to follow correctly.
