This past Wednesday I did a fantastic recruiting panel at Brentwood high school with former Princeton and pro baseball player Stephen Young, women’s head basketball coach at Occidental College Heidi VanDerveer, and UCLA compliance coordinator Dan Goldberg. We spoke about different aspects of the college recruiting process, and the one thing the Brentwood athletic director asked me to discuss is the College Recruiting Game Plan.
3 things that are imperative to an effective college recruiting game plan.
KNOW the TIMELINE
Parents always ask me, “When should I start promoting my student-athlete to college coaches?” I always tell them the best time to start is once you have quality varsity footage. This way a college coach can see you play against top talent and better judge your talent and skills.
TOOLS NEEDED
There are essentially 3 tools you will need to effectively promote yourself to college coaches. The first thing you will need is an athletic resume. The more you can think of the recruiting process like a job interview the more effective you will be in it. The second thing you need is an official transcript. Academics are getting more and more important in the recruiting process each year. The third thing you need is a highlight video. Coaches must see you play if they are going to recruit you.
TAKE CHARGE – PROMOTE, PROMOTE, PROMOTE
This is probably the most important part of your college recruiting game plan. Once you have all of your tools in place, it is imperative that you beging promoting yourself to college coaches. Even if you are the BEST player in your state, and college coaches do not know you exist there is no way for them to effectively recruit you. If is critically important that you do an outstanding job of promoting yourself to college coaches, and then follow up with them to see how you can be an asset to their program.
